Our outdoor space has many opportunities for the children to engage in a range of experiences. We offer lots of open space with opportunities to develop gross motor skills. There are trees to climb, a hill to roll down, swings to swing on and our fort with a slide, fireman’s pole, and log ladder to work all those muscles!
At our preschool, we believe that play that offers an element of risk is essential for a child’s ongoing development and learning. Incorporating challenging and risky play experiences to our outdoor programs is something that we provide, as there are so many benefits of engaging in this style of play offers. This looks like climbing trees, using tools and using loose parts in play (such as sticks, rocks, logs, tyres and pallets).
We have an edible/bush tucker garden that educators and children are always harvesting from for our ‘Garden Goodies’ table (this is a place to take home produce from our garden or bring in excess from yours). The children love spending time planting and tending our garden. Here the children build their knowledge about the natural world and how we can care for our environment.
Our outdoor Art Shed is a space that is always available for children to get creative. Here we focus on the process of what is being made, not the end product. Children have access to all sorts of materials, including natural items from the garden to make anything they can think of! We see lots of kites, umbrellas and baskets for collecting treasure being made each day.
The water pump and sandpit are both a favourite for the children, they are able to pump the water themselves. They use the water for all sorts of creations in the sandpit and to water our garden. Children are constantly cooking up all sorts of delicious treats in the sandpit or digging all the way to the bottom to create tunnels and rivers.
We are outside in all types of weather because we know the benefits of being outside for children and their development. We are very lucky to have such a wonderful space to enjoy!
